The Battle of Gallipoli was a war in which the Ottoman Empire defended itself against the alliance formed by western countries. The Battle of Gallipoli was the war in which the Ottoman Empire wrote an epic as a whole nation. Naval battles took place between 3 November 1914 and 18 March 1915. Land battles were fought on the Gallipoli peninsula between 25 April 1915 and 9 January 1916.
The Allied Powers aimed to capture the Dardanelles and Istanbul. Once the Dardanelles passed to the Allied Powers, they could easily provide all kinds of support to Russia. For this reason, the first attacks on the Dardanelles began in February 1915. The strongest attack was made on March 18, 1915. The enemy navy suffered heavy losses due to the mines laid in the Bosphorus by the Ottoman Army as a war strategy against these attacks. With the sinking of the Nusret Mine Ship, which was of great importance for the navy, the Allied Powers troops were defeated and had to give up the naval attack.
They continued the attack by landing on the Gallipoli Peninsula on 25 April 1915. However, they suffered a great defeat as a result of the great struggle of the Turkish nation together with the Ottoman army. The Allied Powers, which made land landings three times in total, withdrew from the Gallipoli Peninsula in December 1916 after the third defeat.
